Is It Useful for Product Managers to Get the PMP?

Let’s get right to the point: yes!

Let me give you the simplest example here to make it easier for you to understand.

If you were looking for a new job, would you have any direct evidence of a skill you have acquired other than your work experience on your Curriculum Vitae?

I don’t believe there is any other way to directly prove that you have studied other than a certificate, is there?

The certificate you take can directly tell the person you want to tell that you have studied it.

So the best way to be sure is that you hold the corresponding certificate. And the more prestigious that certificate is, the better situation you would face.

The corresponding certificate for product managers is the PMP certificate.

By learning the structure of the five process groups of PMP, what are the ten knowledge areas? At the same time you let yourself learn to work in a systematic, process-oriented way and learn the body of knowledge in new areas of project management. This can be a great help in the workplace.

Project management and product management

Project management: Achieve the application of management knowledge, tools and techniques to project activities in order to achieve solutions to project problems or to meet project requirements. The process begins with the decision to invest in a project and ends with the completion of the project. You should concentrate on planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, controlling and evaluating in order to achieve the project objectives.

Product and project management are not the same. Product management has many target customers while project has only one. But the execution process of both is more or less the same. Both are achieved through the steps of planning, execution, adjustment and control to complete.

Project management and product management are more or less related and there is an overlap of knowledge. But the skills, experience, education and background required for the two roles are different. But do you have less of a role as a product manager? A PMP certificate is still useful.

 Embrace change

“Don’t be afraid of change. Don’t be afraid of risk. Risk equals opportunity.”
